Research lends hope to infertile women.

Chiropractic Care CanAid Conception

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. A study authored by Dr. Madeline Behrendt – Chairwoman of the World Chiropractic Alliance Council on Woman's Health – links chiropractic care and the ability of previously infertile woman to conceive a baby and carry the fetus full term.

Behrendt's work, entitled: Insult, Interference and Infertility: An Overview of Chiropractic Research, was published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. The study tracked 15 women, ages 22-65, who had a history of fertility problems – some for as long as nine years. Eight of the women had previously undergone unsuccessful fertility treatments.

These 15 woman entered chiropractic care. "Each was determined to close the gap between how her body was designed to function and the reality of how her body was functioning," stated Dr. Behrendt.

The results were incredible.

14 of the 15 women became pregnant following the start of chiropractic adjustments. The 65-year old woman had ceased having a menstrual cycle at age 18 following a traumatic fall. Then, nearly five decades later – and little more than a month after starting chiropractic care – her cycles resumed. Although she did not get pregnant, she was advised to use birth control.

"Some of the case studies are remarkable," noted Dr. Ray Nannis, a Richardson-based chiropractor.

A 32 year-old woman described in the study, had no menstrual cycle for 12 years. She had attempted multiple fertility treatments with no success. After two months of chiropractic care – with attention to the lumbar regions – menstruation started. And, after four cycles, unassisted pregnancy occurred. "I'm not saying that chiropractic is a specific cure for infertility, but I will point to the concept that interference within your nervous system can disrupt normal body functions," says Dr. Nannis.

Also detailed was the plight of a 26 year-old woman who suffered from severe scoliosis with a Cobb's angle of 58 degrees. She too was infertile despite numerous medical treatments to assist conception. After six months of chiropractic care – with adjustments applied to the sacrum, lumbar and cervical regions – the Cobb's angle decreased to 47 degrees. One month later, unassisted pregnancy occurred.

The study offers hope to infertile women and an alternative to fertility drugs. There are 40,000 births in the U.S. each year that are achieved using assisted reproductive technologies. But, there are yet to be studies as to the long-term effects of these drugs nor has there been a uniform tracking of birth defects among children conceived using these methods.

The study also defines the chiropractic profession. Chiropractic in itself is not a cure for what ails you, but a means of allowing the human body to operate as it was designed. And, when operating at peak efficiency, the human body can do great things. When you cut yourself – you heal. When the climate changes – your body adjusts. In short, chiropractic care is a great vehicle to improve your general health and function.

Dr. Behrendt's research is wonderful news for couples trying to start a family. It also serves as further evidence that regular spinal adjustments can have benefits far beyond those that the public normally associates with chiropractic care.

University of Chicago Medical Center study links chiropractic care with reduction of blood pressure.

Lowering Blood Pressure an Easy Adjustment

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Researchers at the Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago Medical Center are reporting stunning reductions in the blood pressure of patients afflicted with hypertension following simple and painless chiropractic care.

In the study – published in the March 2, 2007 issue of The Journal of Human Hypertension and featured on WebMD – 50 patients with hypertension were divided into two groups of 25 each. One group of 25 received a specific light force chiropractic adjustment (administered by a chiropractor) to the atlas vertebra (uppermost bone in the neck). This vertebra holds up the head and only relies on soft tissue to maintain alignment. Misalignment, also known as subluxation, usually goes undiagnosed and causes no pain or discomfort. The other group of 25 received a similar procedure but with no adjustment being given. Researchers called this procedure the "sham adjustment." Since the type of adjustment given was very light force, the patients involved in this study did not know if they were receiving the real or sham adjustments.

After 8 weeks of care, the 25 people in the group receiving the real chiropractic adjustments all showed a significant reduction in blood pressure compared to the group that received the sham adjustment. Those patients who got the real adjustment showed an average of 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average of 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number) over those who got the fake or sham adjustment.

"As noted by the chiropractor who performed on the study team, at the base of the brain are two centers that control all the muscles of the body. If you pinch the base of the brain – if the atlas gets locked in a position as little as a half a millimeter out of line – it doesn't cause any pain but it upsets these centers," said Dr. Ray Nannis a chiropractor whose family wellness practice is located in Richardson.

X-rays confirmed that the chiropractic adjustments actually changed the position of the atlas vertebra among those in the study group.

"The study leader reported that the procedure had the effect of not one, but two blood pressure medications given in combination. And, his team reported no side effects whatsoever from the adjustment," added Dr. Nannis

"Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is widespread among adults in the United States. And, if uncontrolled, it can lead to heart and kidney failure or a stroke. According to the American Heart Association, nearly one in three adults suffers from hypertension. However, many are unaware that they are afflicted – making high blood pressure the 'silent killer.' This study offers so much hope," noted Dr. Nannis.

Even with the overwhelming results, the authors of the study posed several questions of their own in the WebMD interview. They wanted to know why blood pressure was reduced. What caused the reduction? What is the relationship between the misaligned atlas vertebra and hypertension?

"Chiropractic care is a maintenance program for the nervous system. If the nervous system is free of stress and operating at peak efficiency, it can lead the body to do incredible things. This study begs for further research. While man struggles to create new and better technologies on a daily basis, we continue to find that the human body is the greatest technology on today's market – let's take good care of it," concluded a smiling Dr. Nannis.

Chiropractic Included At Vancouver Winter Olympic Games

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada, include chiropractic care inside the Olympic Village Polyclinic, a multi-disciplinary facility offering comprehensive healthcare and medical services.

While DCs have historically been included on the Olympic medical staff, this year's events mark the first time that DCs from the host country will be treating athletes and officials from around the world directly inside the Polyclinic.

"This is an historic event not only for the chiropractic profession, but also the athletes who will now have access to the care that will help them prepare their bodies for competition," states Michael Reed, DC, MS, DACBSP, and team USA's medical director (USOC). "These athletes train hard and endure significant physical demands. Sports-focused DCs, along with other members of the sports medicine team, are specially skilled to assist them in reaching peak performance."

Chiropractic care has experienced several major moments in Olympic history, dating back to Leroy Perry, DC, who provided chiropractic care to athletes representing Antigua during the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. During the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY, George Goodheart, DC, became the first official chiropractor appointed to the U.S. team.

With each subsequent Olympic Games and Pan American Games, the U.S. teams — along with a growing number of other national teams — have included at least one doctor of chiropractic on their medical staff.

"Inclusion inside the Polyclinic is another major milestone for the chiropractic profession, and we are grateful to the host city of Vancouver, the head of medical services at the Polyclinic, Jack Taunton, MD, and to Robert Armitage, DC, who helped make this possible," says USOC Director of Sports Medicine Clinics, Bill Moreau, DC, DACBSP.

Local Doctor Points to Hopeful Case Study Result

Chiropractic Care Helps Fibromyalgia Patient

(Wednesday, March 10, 2010 – Richardson, TX). Chiropractic care is often thought of only in terms of relief from a back or neck injury, perhaps suffered in an auto accident or in lifting a too-heavy weight improperly. But the plain truth is that case studies suggest many different health problems may respond to a regular program of chiropractic care. According to a recent case study, the condition known as fibromyalgia, a neurological disorder characterized by pain and a lack of coordination in muscle movements, was resolved following a regimen of chiropractic adjustments.

"There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care," said Dr.Ray Nannis, a Richardson-based chiropractor who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. "And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. But we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many."

Dr. Curtis Fedorchuk, the Georgia chiropractor who conducted the study, says fibromyalgia is a widespread pain syndrome of unknown cause affecting an estimated 1% to 4% of the U.S. population. It is diagnosed based on two factors being present: (1) pain lasting more than 3 months in multiple upper and lower body locations; and (2) pain created by applying less than 4 kilograms of pressure to 11 of 18 trigger points in the body.

"Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, problems with sleeping, and depression," said Dr. Nannis, "and women are 10-20 times more likely to be affected than men."

The 40-year old female in this particular case had been experiencing fibromyalgia symptoms for eight years and had been taking both prescription and non-prescription medications, with little success in treating the problem or its symptoms. The patient underwent a thorough chiropractic exam, and a trans-neuronal dysfunction to the right cerebellum was noted and a diagnosis made. Subluxations were also noted as a result of the examination.

"A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function," said Dr. Nannis. "Many chiropractors, including myself, have non-intrusive technology allowing them to conduct Surface Electromyography (sEMG) and thermal imaging tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist."

According to the case study, reported last fall in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research,

This patient received chiropractic care for . . . nine months. Objective, reliable, and valid findings of subluxation reduction were demonstrated through radiographic analysis, sEMG, and thermography readings. This patient's reduction in subluxations correlated with increased quality of life in seven of eight measured domains of wellness . . . . This patient also experienced reduction in her fibromyalgia-related symptoms of widespread pain, fatigue, depression, and headaches.

"This is just one case study," Dr. Nannis emphasized, "and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn. But as chiropractors, we believe that the nervous system is the master-controller of the systems and functions of the human body. It stands to reason, then, that improvement in nervous system function, which is what we do as chiropractors, can have a beneficial effect on overall health."

13-Year old boy was headache sufferer for four years

Chiropractic Care Offers Benefits Beyond Easing Neck and Back Pain

March 8, 2010, Richardson, TX. According to a case study published late last fall in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, a course of chiropractic care was successful in completely eliminating headaches a 13-year old male patient had been experiencing at least five hours a day for four years.

“Headaches are a common disorder affecting two-thirds of the world’s population,” said Richardson-based Dr. Ray Nannis, D.C., “but we are still in the dark about all the causal factors and, in many instances, the most effective treatment options, which often depend on the mechanics of the specific type of headache presented. Experts have recognized 14 distinct types of headache.”

This particular case study concerns what is know as a cervicogenic headache, likely caused by poor joint function impacting the cervical spine and causing a malfunction of the nervous system. This type of headache presents symptoms such as “recurrent moderate to severe headaches arising from the neck . . . .” The cervical spine most often shows reduced range of motion, which causes pain spikes with certain movements of the head and neck.

The initial chiropractic examination of the patient involved in this case study noted problems with posture and range of motion, along with “subluxations” in the thoracic and cervical spine.

“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Ray Nannis. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have special, non-intrusive technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist. Because we know that the nervous system is the master controller of almost all bodily functions,” Dr. Ray Nannis continued, “we are not surprised when improvement of nervous system function contributes greatly to normal bodily function in a wide variety of areas.”

After just six weeks of chiropractic care, the patient’s posture and range of motion improved significantly. More important to the young man, he was headache free for the first time in four years.

“There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr.Nannis, who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. More research is needed, but we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”
